The Dartmoor Way Continued:
Over the first weekend of September, when the weather, true to classic pattern, changed to beautiful Indian summer after a rather damp July/ August, a select group of us completed the Dartmoor Way. As a club we have done the 10 days (mostly 10 to 12 miles each, making over 100 miles in total) over 5 weekends in 2022 and 2023. It has been a really worthwhile experience, well thought out and interesting, circling Dartmoor to take in villages, rivers, woodland and farmland as well as high moorland areas. On this most recent weekend we covered sections from Ivybridge to Shipley Bridge and then Shipley Bridge to Ashburton, with perhaps the most spectacular section being from Shipley Bridge up to the Avon Dam, where the views stretched for miles in every direction.
The walks are demanding but not overwhelming and doing it as a group is great fun. It also enabled us to do car shuttles to achieve the linear walks, though some of the more remote staging posts required some “interesting” lane driving! Plus, we have explored parts of Dartmoor that most of us have not seen before and may well like to return to in future.
